Yes. We require athletes to have at least two years of ski racing experience in order to be a member of the team, including traveling with them.
This requirement is adopted to help maintain a manageable team size that can be adequately supported with the club’s current resources, to ensure the safety and preparedness of all participating athletes given the advanced nature and inherent risks of alpine ski racing, and to reduce liability exposure to the club, its officers, and the University by ensuring all participants possess sufficient prior experience to engage safely and independently in competitive events.

Yes! We train at Solitude Ski Resort in Big Cottonwood Canyon. This is one of the only mountains with unlimited days on the Ikon pass and is about 30 minutes from campus. We try to train 2-4 days per week to ensure a good amount of time in the gates. Due to limited hill space, we train slalom, but free-skiing with giant slalom skis is highly encouraged.

Being an Ikon pass holder will benefit you the most throughout the season as most of the mountains we race at are on the Ikon pass. The Ikon BASE pass is suggested to be able to train at Solitude, but an Ikon FULL pass is highly encouraged for athletes planning on going to all of the races because there are two races that fall on blackout dates, which are not accessible with the base pass. We also do team free-ski days at Alta or Snowbird, which are accessed with an Ikon full pass.

No one is required to go to every race. However, in order to qualify for regionals, athletes must compete at two regular season races.
Before the season starts we decide on the number of athletes allowed to go to each race. This number is decided based on USCSA requirements, housing space, and costs. In the past, we have had around 25-30 athletes at each race.
Athletes attending each race is determined by a first come, first served basis. At least two weeks before each race, we will send out a form that asks who is planning on going to each race. If we have a lot of athletes interested in a certain race and go over capacity, we create a waitlist for those who did not make the cut-off (filled out the form later than others). Due to housing costs, athletes must commit to races two weeks in advance. If an athlete wishes to drop from the race with less than two weeks notice, they must pay the housing fee if there is no waitlist for another athlete to join the race. If there is a waitlist, we will give that spot away to the first athlete on the waitlist.
